My first birth, I was terrified but tried not to show it. I was an emergency nurse — I'd seen everything that could go wrong, so I chose the biggest hospital "just in case." I did what most women do: read the books, went to antenatal classes, assumed I was prepared.

 

I wasn't.

My second birth — honestly, I just went with it again. Episiotomy this time. Another difficult recovery.
